Most notary visits at our Mississauga office take about ten minutes. The ones that take longer are almost always because something was missing. Here is the full checklist.
1. One original government-issued photo ID
A driver’s licence, passport, Ontario Photo Card, permanent resident card or citizenship card with photo all work. The ID must be current and original; photocopies and phone photos cannot be accepted. For affidavits, an ID that shows your current address is best, because the affidavit will state where you live.
2. The complete document, unsigned
Affidavits, declarations and consent letters must be signed in front of the notary. If you signed at home, bring or print a fresh copy. Bring every page, including any schedules and exhibits.
3. The instructions
If a bank, lender, foreign consulate or law firm sent you the document, bring their covering letter or email. They often specify the exact wording of the notarial certificate, and having it saves guesswork.
4. For certified true copies: the original
We compare the copy against the original in front of you, so the original passport, degree or licence has to be in the room. We make the photocopy here.
5. Anyone else who has to sign
Each person whose signature is being notarized must attend in person with their own ID. Wills and powers of attorney also need two witnesses; we can provide them.
What you do not need
An appointment (walk-ins are welcome on weekdays), extra copies, or a cheque: we take cash, e-transfer and credit cards.
